It’s confirmed, the PlayStation VR 2 will feature eye tracking technology from the Swedish tech company, Tobii. For the moment, however, we still do not know the official launch date of the next-gen VR headset from sony. Nevertheless, she is apparently approaching.

Tobii recently published a press release confirming that the PlayStation VR 2 will use its eye tracking technology. It follows an announcement published last February. As a reminder, the Swedish company said at the time that it was in the process of to negotiate with Sony to provide eye tracking technology for its new VR headset. The Japanese new technologies giant therefore accepted his offer. According to her, the agreement should represent “more than 10%” of her turnover in 2022.

Tobii: PSVR 2 will use its eye tracking technology for a variety of applications

The PlayStation VR 2 is expected to use Tobii’s eye tracking technology for a wide variety of applications. the rendered foveal would be part of it. It refers to a technique following the gaze of any user. It then renders only the exact center of the point it is looking at. The areas of peripheral vision are therefore not fully restored.

Note that this process is supposed to be imperceptible to the naked eye. This should render PSVR 2 games noticeably best. However, for the moment, we have not yet seen the feature in action. Anyway, Tobii has been developing its eye tracking technology for years. The company has already integrated it into some VR headsets.

It has, among other things, incorporated it into the HTC Vive Pro Eye in 2019. It also recently integrated it into the Pico Neo 3 Pro Eye and at HP Reverb G2 Omnicept Edition. The company has also already worked with Qualcomm in 2018 to develop reference autonomous VR equipment with eye tracking.

Apparently, Sony should start mass producing the PlayStation VR 2 soon. After all, the analyst Ming Chi Kuo claimed that mass production of the VR device will begin in second half of 2022. It should then land on the market in the first quarter of 2023. However, nothing is official yet.
