Facebook starts testing Ethereum and Polygon NFTs on profile pictures

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has started rolling out NFTs for select US creators on its flagship social network.

Facebook is starting with NFTs from Ethereum and Polygon, but will soon add support for NFTs from Solana and Flow, a Meta representative told Decrypt via email.

Meta Product Manager Navdeep Singh shared a preview of what NFTs will look like on Facebook in a Twitter post on Wednesday. According to the post, users will have a “digital collectibles” tab on their Facebook profile where they can showcase their NFTs, which are unique blockchain tokens that signify ownership.

Users will be able to connect their wallets to crypto-currencies to their Facebook profile. They will also be able to turn their NFTs into Facebook posts, which can be reacted to, liked, commented on and shared like any other post.

Technology and media consultant Martin Bryant said Meta “clearly wants to provide a home for Web3 people” with the announcement, given that the company also recently began testing changes to Facebook Groups to make them look like ” more to Discord”.

The social media giant previously began rolling out NFTs on Instagram for select creators “in a handful of countries” in May, Meta’s representative confirmed to Decrypt via email.

In an earlier announcement, Instagram said that NFTs posted or shared on the app will automatically tag the creator and collector of the NFT, and the company won’t charge a fee for posting or sharing the NFTs. Collectors will also be able to share their NFTs as augmented reality stickers.

Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, previously said that Instagram is rolling out NFT features in part because of the growing creator economy.

“We think a really exciting opportunity for a subset of creators is NFT, which is the idea of owning a unique digital object,” Mosseri said in May.
