a hybrid technology to wait for the electric in 2030

For two years, Nissan has largely renewed its range both in terms of design but above all with its engines which tend towards electrified vehicles. The manufacturer is aiming for 75% of its sales of electrified vehicles in 2026 and 100% in 2030. While waiting for this date, the Japanese manufacturer is counting on an intermediate technology: e-Power, which is a hybrid response to stopping diesel. Nissan is also counting on the hybrid and the 100% electric.

Transitional technology: the last vehicle before electric

“e-Power is our answer to electrification for the next seven to eight years before going electric,” explains Arnaud Charpentier, vice-president product strategy and price Europe region. “In terms of driving pleasure, we are getting closer to electric. In terms of consumption, it is very efficient around 5.3 liters per 100 kilometers”.

This allows Nissan to bring its customers towards this driving close to electric. This is a first step with Qashqai and X-Trail soon. “It is a technology that we have mastered well since the launch in Japan in 2016 with Notes. Compared to the Mild Hybrid, this is an extra charge of 1500 euros”.

e-Power: an efficient and scalable technology

This technology was intended to replace diesel. “With the Arya, this is the first chapter in a long story, then the city car on the B segment announced with the Alliance, then the SUV on the C segment shortly after 2023”. And to add: “It was important to come up with a technology that gives efficiency to a small internal combustion engine. This system makes it possible to send electrical energy to the four wheels, that’s all the difference with a conventional hybrid”.

Compared to the rechargeable hybrid, this technology becomes interesting in an economic context of a price of gasoline at more than 2 euros per litre. The brand aims to sell 50 to 60% e-Power technology on the X-Trail and Qashqai models.

Preparing for the year 2028 and the new electric batteries

e-Power is a Nissan technology with a heat engine that powers a converter that generates electricity for the four wheels. Note work on vehicle weight and aerodynamics.

Until 2028, Nissan intends to make further progress on its electric batteries to achieve a cost saving of 65% by working in particular on cobalt. On this date, the arrival of the solid battery would improve autonomy and reduce charging time.

A technology to replace diesel and then the rechargeable hybrid

In terms of semiconductor supply and crisis, Arnaud Charpentier still foresees a difficult year 2023. Vehicles equipped with e-Power will be delivered next September in France as well as Aryia, which has 7,400 orders in Europe. “With e-Power, we are targeting France, Spain and Italy as well as Germany, which were the big diesel and PHEV countries,” concludes Arnaud Charpentier at Nissan.
